As weird as it sounds, when things have that much sentiment and attachment to them, it's hard NOT to hear the prayers. I think you did the right thing in encouraging her to do her own research and to give it the care something so personal as a prayer shawl deserves.
She sounds like someone who is interested in preserving her memories of her grandfather and the shawl is her connection to him. I think you did a wonderful thing!
