I think...I will make new garb.

Storvik Novice Tourney is coming up in a week and a half and I think I will make new garb. Nice comfy garb. I need an extra outfit for Pennsic any way and I produce better with deadlines.

I dug out my book of early Anglo-Saxon clothing and decided to bite the bullet and make a tube dress with an under tunic. This of course means I will need to finish my two bone dress pins. I had one roughed out and smoothed and tonight I roughed out the other to be sanded smooth tomorrow. Since I have the next two days off I might even get one worked down far enough to be the proper sharpness. I am glad the weather has been nice so I can work outside. I cannot stand to scrape the bone in the house. It is a MESS. I work the bone by hand without any electric tools so the going is a bit slower but it is uber fun to make something like this with your own two hands.

Go Me! New accessories!
I'm also going to make a leather ring purse to wear with it but it will have a brass ring for the neck of the pouch instead of an ivory one. Since the leather totally covers the ring it will pass the 5 foot rule.

Oh wait, no, it won't.
I've gone and told you all....
LOOK AWAY! NOTHING TO SEE HERE.
FORGET I SAID ANYTHING!! *giggle!*

My fabric is a linen/cotton blend woven in a very simple plaid in cream and light tan. The cotton part is not correct but I really like the fabric and for summer wear it will be comfortable enough. I'll wear my linen under-dress under it, my brown Medieval Moccasins shoes, a simple belt and the bone pins. I will also be stringing a new string of beads so that I can hang my new bone Pearl Medallion.

We are also going to try to rework one of the tube dresses that Aelfwynn owns. She really likes to shoot archery in them but I think they are too wide. If we make them elbow to elbow instead of wrist to wrist they will be less floppy and we can fit them better to hide the ladies unmentionables that sometimes peek out at the sides. Just cause you got it does NOT mean everybody else needs to see it.

Ah well off to bed as I had a late night last night. I want to get an early start.

Sounds interesting! I need to make new stuff too...

New stuff can rejuvenate you.
It doesn't have to be a big project just something new. I like feeling of accomplishment when I hold the finished item.

Embroidery question for you - When you have a project on a frame, do you loosen it when you are not working on it? So far I have only worked with cross-stitch on aida cloth. But it looks like the fabric needs to be taut for this chinese style embroidery, and to put the cloth on the frame traditionally looks to be time consuming...

Yes when stretched on a slate frame it is left stretched the entire working period. That is the purpose of this type of frame to keep your work consistently tight with little or no adjustments needed.

When you use a slate frame the ground fabric is stable and straight for working and it reduces shrinkage immensely.

and yes the initial set up is time consuming but it is time well spent when your work improves by leaps and bounds. Any ground fabric benefits from using a slate frame, even cross stitch done on aida cloth.

Thanks! I am happy to hear that you keep it stretched on the slate frame... I was just imagining myself having to stretch it everytime I wanted to work on it, lol

Ooooo! I'd have to kill myself if I had to re-do it everytime or take up another hobby! LOL!

We added about 4 inches of stitching on either side of mine, and the looseness covers the stitching, and it keeps from showing the girls off to those who I don't want to see them :)

I hear ya! I'm embarrassed for some of these women who let it "all hang out" and call it good.

Do you think you could send some of that cheerfulness and can-do attitude down here. I've been in the doldrums lately. Keep me posted as to your progress and, oh yes, what exactly is it that I'm not supposed to be looking at? Hummmm??

NEVER MIND NOTHING TO SEE MOVE ALONG....

Actually the pouch ring should be ivory and it makes sense as you can cut the tusk easily enough across to make a simple ring but Ivory isn't so easy to get a hold of these days and I must substitute. The metal will be heavier but will do the job.

I'm also going to make a leather ring purse to wear with it but it will have a brass ring for the neck of the pouch instead of an ivory one.

You're so busted! (If you bring it to Pennsic, may I see how you worked out the cover/top of the pouch? I'm having trouble making one that works and I know the answer is simple and I'm just not getting it.)

AHHHHHHHH!!!!! D*nm! :-)

I'm going by the illustration and text in the "Dress in Anglo-Saxon England" on page 69. It's only a conjecture of how the pouch could have been constructed.

It looks like the material of the pouch is longer in the back than in the front instead of being the same size front and back. I'll need to make a couple of samples to verify this. I have a nice piece of tanned deer hide that I plan to use and line it in linen.

These purses appear in art work but it's difficult to ascertain how they are constructed just by that. Ain't it the way!

Oh yes, and it appears that the "tops" were a Germanic thing. Tops have not been found on Anglo-Saxon ring purses.
