This weekend along with all the other wonderful things that went on in Bright Hills one more special thing happened.

I took my first apprentice.
She is sarahjeanh, Katerina das Vogelein. Her Majesty bronx_baroness allowed me to do the ceremony in court and even signed the indenture as a witness. I asked HRM to take possession of the Barony so that all would know I did this as Mistress of the Laurel and not as Territorial Baroness. We exchanged gifts for our bond and read the contract in court. After we signed it and HRM witnessed it. I tore it in half in front of the populace and Kateria and I each kept a half. I then swore fealty to her Majesty as a peer of the Society. Her Majesty then gave the barony back to me.

In the grand tradition of my own Laurel elfsea_escapee I told Katerina she did not have to wear the apprentice belt if it did not actually "go" with her outfit! :-)

At Pennsic this year my plan is to go to the House Bloodguard encampment with gifts to give Duke Andreas in recompense for the loss of such a fine household member. Date and time to be named later if anyone wants to tag along. :-)

Very, very cool. These are the kind of things that make me go all gooey inside with the relinquishing of the territory, etc.

If I ever become an apprentice, or end up in a similar state from either side, I'm definitely advocating for a proper, indentured, document.

I love traditions and I also believe these sorts of things deserve the proper "show".

Katerina has been a member of our barony for a couple of years now and I did a little "boo-yah!" when she approached me about becoming an apprentice.

I did the same thing with I took priategirleee as my protoge. Rather than a blue belt or a belt in my colors, I bought her a black leather belt from Billie & Charlie - appropriate for the all of the Middle-period clothes she tends to wear. She can wear it or not. I also gave her a ring, which she does wear at most events. That is how we showed fealty in House Ainesesstor - not with a belt, but with a ring.

My student, edelweiss68 has an enameled pin of my personal badge. I have been thinking of going an alternate route for belts one day too, when that day comes. Belt optional, but at least a pin with a bit of green ribbon hanging from it.
