Today saw me moving my desk out of the dining room and into the basement. I got tired of seeing the mayhem and foolishness that was my desk right next to where I needed to eat. Beside all my crafts and SCA projects and research books are all in the basement. Having my desk near all that only made sense.

We are purging bits and bobs slowly but surely. This Thursday I will be-
1) going to the NESAP shop to drop off 3 bags of clothes,
2) the Swap Shop at the landfill to leave an old chair and a fireplace mantle,
3) the dump part of the landfill to get rid of the old fireplace parts,
4) Walmart to get two more clear storage bins for winter clothes and Erica "crap"
5) load the truck for ToC on Saturday.

busy busy busy!

I keep repeating a quote I heard a while ago,
"If you had to move tomorrow, would you really want to take it with you?"
If the truthful answer is no, then out it goes.

I like that criterion! My big question is "will I actually use it in a timely fashion, or will it just take up space and further my frustration?" That just got me to sort through four bags of hand me down baby clothes - now happily at home in drawers, in labeled boxes, or back in the bags to go get sold at our local kids used clothes store. Even better? My husband didn't complain when I told him he needed to find somewhere to stick 6 boxes of clothes!

Wow, baby clothes. I know how hard they are to purge through. But it has to be done.
Go you for selling some on consignment!

Clothes, man that is one thing my husband can hold on to. The problem is he buys stuff on sale at Walmart which is not necessarily a problem but he won't give up any old stuff.

This weekend when we pulled out the summer clothes I put my foot down and made him purge out clothing I know he does not wear. That's where two of the bags came from!

"MADE HIM purge out..."

Lol... MAKING my husband do something? Ha! I knew you had special secret powers, but I didn't know Husband Control was among them! Wow! ;)

I was a little bit virtuous, too. After finishing my taxes today, I did the annual Filing Drawer Purge. I ditched all my 2006 receipts, and plan to go through the Medical and Dental folders tomorrow & purge them up till, oh, maybe last June. How much history do I need to keep, after all?

Excellent!
I'm always amazed at how much paper there is to ditch at the end of the year.

Let's see I Keep-
*7 years of banking and IRS records.
(IRS can only investigate back 7 years)

*current year of credit card, utilities bills, etc.

*one year of medical receipts especially since I have one of those medical savings plans. Or just current year to be sure claims are paid.

Also keep-
*All of your investment statements so when you go to sell stocks you don't have to pay to recreate the information for gains/loss reporting on your income taxes.

Don't worry - I know what it is that I need to keep and what I can get rid of. Duke Power bills, which I can access on-line, anyway, do not need to be kept. And it's far enough since last Christmas that I don't need to worry about the receipts, again, since I have electronic copies of most of them anyway! So it's time for another "reduction of paperwork" act.

I also went through all my murder mysteries and now have three full paper bags to take to the used book store. And I have the most part of an empty bookshelf to accomodate the overflow from my garb books and any new history books I might care to purchase.

BG&E lets me have e-bill too but they still send a paper one. How crazy is that? I even have auto-billing on the budget plan.

Whew! I can see we are all glad it's spring again!

wonderful job! I know how hard it is to get started, and how hard to keep going... just plug right on through. It's so worth it in the end. :)

Reminds me that I need to get my craft room going again. :P I kinda lost steam somewhere in there...

Thanks!
I am basically a very lazy person so any stuff I can get rid of is less work for me in the end. No more moving, storing, dusting, rearranging to get to other stuff. :-P

And WOW is that the crux of it, eh? Oh, to be able to deal with things once and be done with them!

What is "the swap shop at the landfill"?

The local landfill has an outbuilding where you can leave reusable items to be taken for free. Stuff like furniture, building supplies, household items etc. The only things they don't accept are upholstered furniture and clothes.

It's a good place to pick up or leave a treasure. I like to leave stuff that the charity shops won't take but still have a useful life.
