martelvonc: (Happy!)

As my faithful peanut gallery knows I am not much of a hat person. My hair doesn't stay neatly under them, I fidget with them, and generally they make me cranky. (6 year old style cranky that is) It's THE main reason I don't do Tudor garb and I'm not so fond of veils and wimples.

I've been known to quite frequently show up at an event with a veil/hat/cap on and ditch it after about 20 minutes. My hair is crazy the rest of the day but I am happy.

But Yesterday I decided to try a [livejournal.com profile] bronx_baroness and [livejournal.com profile] molly_world style wrapped and twisted scarf. At this point you should all be utterly amazed, I actually got the piece of fabric positioned, twisted, wrapped & secured on my head WITH the baronial coronet.

and it stayed that way ALL day! Who Knew?

My coronet did not give me a migraine yesterday because it was supported on the twists of the fabric.

Now I can't wear this hair covering with many types of garb so I guess that means that if you want me to wear hats I'll be wearing more of those types of garb! :-)

I never used to wear a veil, as I could never keep it from sliding about (without pins, which drive me nuts), but I started wearing sort of a turbaned headrail a couple of years ago (like Anglo Saxons wore UNDER their veils), and it works wonderfully. I have a bit of linen about 15" wide by 60 inches long, and I basically cover my head with it, wrap it about, and knot it at the nape of my neck. I shove my braid up under (no dust, no bugs = easier comb-outs, and the need for fewer shampoos), and it works pretty darned well.

Its funny, actually, folks who knew me before don't recognize me in one, and folks who have met me since don't recognize me *without* one!

That's it, that's what I wore with my viking outfit yesterday. No pins involved and it actually kept my hair contained. A few bits came out but they were easily tucked back in.

As [livejournal.com profile] alina_s has said..."The power of friction!"

I have to say that my hair has never stayed cleaner at events, nor me cooler (white cloth vs brown hair), especially since I could soak down the cloth before putting it on. And, gee shucks, it goes great with my early period garb. :)

When I can get it to work (sometimes I can, sometimes my hair just laughs at my feeble attempts at control); it works pretty well as long as I'm careful not to wind too tight.. otherwise... while it does work I end up with a headache. I guess you could say that I'm wrapped too tight :-)

I'm soooo going to have to try that. My coronet is so tight (because my head is abnormally freakin' big) that not only do I end up with a headache but also a shoulder ache.

Do you get Tournaments Illuminated. Is the head wrap similar to those from a couple of issues ago (on turbans?)

I hear ya! I wear the Baron's coronet because it is bigger!

I'm not sure I'll have to go back and look. Do you know what issue it was in?
