Of Patterns and Hoods And Garb.
Feb. 18th, 2008 08:57 amToday sees me meeting with the splendorifus Mistress Jeanmaire about KASF and the Pentathalon in Persona.
Then later today I'm meeting with Lady Swiazca Kaim to help me draft a couple of patterns for a hood and maybe a cotehardie if we have time. We will also be going over my fabric stash-O-death and seeing what can be used for something else. My goal is to have enough different outfits for at least one per day for Pennsic (8) with a couple extra in case of disaster, like when I can't feed myself properly and decide the front of a gown is good place to store drips...
If nothing else goes right at Pennsic, I am much happier if I always have clean garb available. I'm not so excited to spend my play time at the laundromat.
I'm thinking we should maybe go over my current outfits too and project out the textile accessories that are missing. I'd like to have a seperate set for each outfit that way I can bag em' up and attach it to the hanger of the outfit. This will allow me to grab a hanger and go. No running about hunting for hosen, veils, caps etc. at the last minute. Belts, jewelry etc. are kept in a box that pretty much follows me to events all the time so I don't often forget that.
I have to say I'm building up a better set of garb now. I guess being baroness does that to you. I must smile because I've had a certain member of our barony that says "You need more fancy outfits as baroness!" and I tell him I DO have fancy outfits that are appropriate for the culture and time period they represent. I think I frustrate him at times. :-) Heck I'm not going to use questionable fabric choices just for the sake of "bling".
There's a story on the streets about me that once a long time ago I made an outfit and was advised that it was not quite *right*. The story goes that I threw the outfit in the back of the closet never to be seen again. I don't recall it happening exactly that way but what did happen was a person I greatly respect for their costuming skills told me I'd made a less than stellar choice. Now I know when to cut a loss and instead of continuing to wear an outfit with serious problems I just stopped wearing it. I do not look back on the incident with any sort of unhappyness or sadness. Hey, an ugly outfit is an ugly outfit. You know it in your heart and when someone else confirms it, it's time for it to go.
Heck, I even did it on my own. I made a cotehardie and a sideless surcoat in the 80's. I wore said outfit to one event. It was so absolutly hideous I never wore it again. That one did not even take someone else to mention it. Ugly was just Ugly. I do have a photo of it I trot out once in a while to scare the children though.
So I am not going to *bling* up an outfit just to meet someone else's picture of what fancy should be. I don't want my friends to point and laugh.
