Due to the efforts of our Kingdom A&S Officer and keeper of the AEG webpage, Karen Larsdatter, I have my first "How To" article on line!

http://aeg.atlantia.sca.org/projects/howto/martbook.htm

Wow, Seeing what I write is amazing to me as I am not what one would call a writer. I can research and gather facts just fine but I find it very hard to put it all together in an interesting and readable manner. I envy those amoungst us who can write real articles for TI or other publications. I can't even begin to fathom a whole book!

Ah, well, I'm okay with this and I will leave the great tomes to those who have the talent for it.

Thank you!
Karen has inspired me to try to make a girdle book next. :-)
So much to make, so little time!

There was a girdle book with a beadworked cover in the A&S competition at Chalice of the Sun God last autumn; looked pretty neat. (Some links on girdle books at moas.atlantia.sca.org/wsnlinks/index.php?action=displaycat&catid=453 if you're looking for such things [or if other readers here are scratching their heads and thinking, "What the heck is a girdle book?"] -- all of the extant examples of medieval girdle books used leather for the binding. Don't think there's actual evidence for medieval embroidered girdle books, but they'd be fun for SCA stuff.)

You know what would be funny? Doing an embroidered binding for a notebook (like a three-ring binder or somesuch), and then putting the documentation in the notebook, and entering it into one of those competitions for "best concealed modern item." Look, cleverly-concealed documentation! Hee.

Added the little leaves to the embroidery on my bookcover last night. So now, it looks like a crazy red ball on a stick, with a little green clown collar. Hah! It does look more like a berry, I s'pose, and it does look more closely-related to the pattern in the book.

I happen to have a deer hide that I've sort of inherited from my dad. I think it would work deliciously! It is a warm golden color and is buttery soft. I'm going to go to the local art store and get one of those small 4"x5" black sketch books for it.
