Today I'm going to run up to Ikea in White Marsh and see if I can get one of those nifty wooden boxes they are selling. Folks have been doing amazing things to them to make them more period looking!

I can handle the staining and coating but I think I'll need to commission someone to paint the panels.

So, now I'm not so sure I've got allergies but a minor head cold. I'm sorry to all I came in contact with last night. Load up on your Zinc and Vitamin C.

The Knight says I need to slow down. He may be right but I won't be able to anytime soon. Crown, ATM, 2 Pennsic classes , Kingdom Crusades, New surcoat for knight, new Pennisc garb for 3, Pennsic gift basket project, Lions-embroidering/not running from, On Target!, Highland River Melees, bid process of KA&SF,

But you know, I'm enjoying it all so far. It is still fun and that's what is most important. I shouldn't go on at this pace forever but then I don't expect it to last forever. My hobbies are constantly fluctuating and I just go with the flow.

IKEA Boxes

I updated the article the other day - it looks like the IKEA APA box has changed in the past two years (now it's got particleboard inset on the lid, and the dimensions seem different). But you might also like their KARTOTEK box -- I'm not entirely sure, but I think you could do pyrography on the birch plywood (which you certainly couldn't do on the fiberboard). :-)

They don't sell the box like yours anymore and I'm bummed!

The new APA box has masonite panel, one side white but the inside is rough textured bare masonite. It doesn't have the same look at all anymore. :-(

I didn't see the Kartotek box either. I could have gone for that instead.

Sheesh, I'm a day late and a dollar short...

Yah ... sorry about that. :-( The old-style APA box fiberboard insets were chocolate brown and a kinda-rough texture (I'd primed those panels before painting 'em).

If you do end up going back -- here's another Creative Project Idea for you. They have some nifty little glasses -- RARA, TEST, and RÄTTVIK to me are the most similar to actual period shapes in glassware, but I don't know what your period if interest is (in terms of feast gear), or if your tastes run to other sorts of things. But, in any case, they're pretty cheapish and would make a fun addition to feast gear.

But to get back to the "consumer goods as blank canvas" concept, you could imitate period enamelled glassware using Pebeo Porcelaine, which is available in a lot of craft shops (and online too, if you can't find it up your way).

Some inspiration pieces for you:

Of course, you could also take up engraving ... :-)

You are true wealth of information!
Thank you very much!

I'm going to use some of this for the class on tablesetting I'll be teaching at Pennsic.
