I'm diligently working on my A&S entry for crown. I've had to re-start it because I became impatient with my calligraphy. I didn't let it dry long enough and smeared it. But since I followed the hallowed rule of "do the calligraphy BEFORE you do the art" I was frustrated but not not enough to want to open a vein in dispair.
I'm okay with this since I have 2 weeks yet and the project is fully planned so re-laying out the design is a piece of cake. It's just part of the art.

It's been quite a while (read hear 20 years) since I last worked on calligraphy and illumination. Funny enough this was the first art I did in the SCA besides costuming. I turned out some minor local scrolls of no import. I then moved into doing other things and this was suplanted by other interests. It's even FUNNIER if you've ever seen my regular handwriting! I'm a charter member of The "People Who Write Like a Blind Chicken" Society.

My interest was sparked again by this years Tempore Atlantia competition at Crown Tournament which is for the time period of pre-1000 A.D. A competition is being sponsored for Best Calligraphy and Illumination of a Manuscript Page. I've taken a liking lately to Mozarabic illumination and it's early simplicity. This would be a perfect style to enter this time around.

So now it's back to the table to try again. After all it's only paper...
(yes, yes, I know they rarely if ever used actual paper they used vellum or parchement)
