Thoughts on "stuff"
Apr. 29th, 2005 07:31 amI have spent the last 3 weeks cleaning out "stuff". The basement has been the main area of this effort. The back room is cleaned out and pretty straight. I just need to go through the boxes left and purge them. The Knight complained about having to clean out his rats nest of computer ick. You know the ick. Every paper, every disc, every booklet, every extra wire, screw, clamp, plug that comes with EVERY computer geegaw you buy. Then he saves the bits he replaces too! It had to end. So I scraped it all into a laundry basket, sorted it and when he came home I said "Make a decision about this or I WILL" To his immense credit he did just that. It got wittled down to 3 neat shoeboxes.
I don't mind if the family wants to keep things BUT when the "stuff" is just cramed into places and all over the floor it means that these things don't really have meaning to you. It needs to go.
My hobbies had reached a critical level of untidyness. Everyone in the family was complaining about the "basket farm" in the living room and dining room. The fact of the matter was I had no storage for my hobbies. None. zip. Nada. So I guilted the family into letting me spend money on a non-pay week. We went to Sam's Club and bought one of those restaurant shelving units. These bad boys can hold 600lbs PER SHELF and each unit has 6 shelves. Yes my friend, you got it, a total payload of 3,600lb.
Now I have lots of stuff, but not nearly that much, so I knew these could meet my needs. When I got my beauty home I found a surprise. You can build these as one tall unit OR as TWO short units! Wheee! I made two short units very quickly. I also filled them quickly.
The Knight has one of those a nifty lable makers that will make heat printed lables. So I sorted everything out into plastic shoeboxes and labled it all. I went through the baskets and tossed the trash and loose pins and lint. Now I can see what I have and pack my SCA project basket more efficiently. I don't need to carry it all with me all the time!
Untill recently I was a pack rat in the proud tradition of my father. Well, maybe not as bad but I was pert near close. Problem is I also am not a fan of housework. After seeing the shows where pepole are given help cleaning out thier "nests" I decided that I didn't want to end up like that. I also found I am doing a boat load of extra work servicing the "stuff" that I am not enjoying or ever plan on using again.
We by no means have a trophy home. It's modest and comfortable and now that it getting cleaned out it's home-y.
Maybe this will rub off on the kids....
Nahhh...
