Nov. 6th, 2005 04:04 pmWell over the past two days I have made 54 pairs of 6" dipped tapers and 9 pairs of twisted tapers.
I gave up for the day when I got tired of standing in front of the stove. I'm out of wicking but I still have 5 lbs of beeswax I can melt. So I will be surfing the net to find a candle making supply Co. to buy the cotton wicking from.
I've been conducting a burn time test on one of my candles. I have so far found that a 6" taper burns for over 4 straight hours with no dripping. The stub looks like it may have about another hour to it before it is too short to get out of the candle stick. That's not too shabby for a homemade light source.
A trip to the goodwill store is in my future so that I can look for a couple of pots to act as double boilers for melting wax. It's a pain the neck to scrub out my regular cooking pots every time I melt wax. I try to be neat but some wax always gets in the double boiler water and sticks to the cook pot.
The knight says I should take this up as a cottage industry. We'll see. I'd have to work out a few bugs first.
**Update: I finished the burn time test and one 6" beeswax taper, if out of a draft, will burn absolutely dripless for 5 hours and 10 min.,leaving only a 1 1/4" stub. So I guess technically a 6" candle has a fuel length of 4 3/4" for 5 hours of burn time. I did not burn the candle down to the end as my candle holder was made of wood and I really like it....
