martelvoncThe dog sitter for one of the religious Jewish home school moms in our group has her grandfathers 100 year old Tallit that she would like me to stabilise on silk gauze for her. I was brought to her attention because I do needlework. It was found quite by accident while she clearing her grandmothers home after her death.
It is a wonderful but very fragile thing. She cannot afford to have it restored so the plan is to stabilize it on the silk guaze with silk thread, then refold it into the tallit bag. I told her remember to always "do no harm" and to do only what can be reversed in the future.
This one is not wool but silk. Hence the choice of silk gauze to stabilize with.
She is having a shadow box made to display the Bag with the prayer shawl, a very fragile Tallit Katan, his Tefillin (Shel Rosh only. I don't know if she also has the Shel Yad), She has couple of silver pieces to put in the display also along with a picture of her grand parents.
She was ready to give it to me last night and I told her no, she should look at my handwork. She doesn't know me or my skills from Adam. I also told her to do research on conservation (I gave her a boat load of resources) and then decide exactly how she wants all this displayed. I recommend that the shawl be displayed in the bag as this is what should be done anyway and this will keep it forever out of the light. I told her we could arrange it with the four tassels coming our of the top of the bag if she wanted to be able to see a part of it.
Call me crazy but as she unfolded it I could almost hear the whispers of all the prayers that her grandfather had said under that shawl.
