Well, my visit to the optometrist went better than I could have hoped.

I walked out being able to see clearly. How was this accomplished you ask?

I am now the proud owner of my very first pair of contact lenses.

Yes, for the first time in 43 years I am no longer a slave to face furniture.

After my eye exam I was talking to my friendly shop clerk (who by chance happens to be the DIL of our baronial archery marshal, Lady Katarzyna) and we got to talking about the SCA. She asked if I had considered contact lenses. I said that I didn't think I could wear them due to my astigmatism. She asked the optometrist if he could see me again about contact lenses. He checked me out, took some measurements, and said "let me look in the stock room".

In a couple of minutes he had two small packages and said these weren't exactly my prescription but they were very close and I could try them to see if I liked them. So they talked me through putting them in and Wow! I now know the true meaning of having my socks blown off.

I still need reading glasses of +1 strength but that's fine with me.

The best part is I can now buy ANY pair of sunglasses from anywhere, in any color, in any shape. Heck, I can buy 20 pairs if I want to!

Next week I go back to pick up my additional lenses and the spare set of bi-focals for when I can't wear the contacts.

I had no idea. I'm very sorry I did not find this out sooner.

Yes, I have horrible astigmatisms in both eyes, yet my optometrist has always gotten me into contacts. I do have glasses, but I rarely wear them because I cannot abide the blind spots!!!

One thing my first (and favorite) eye doctor told me was to make sure I ALWAYS wore sunglasses outdoors. The astigmatism seems to intensify the light almost like a magnifying glass. I usually buy a ton of cheapie sunglasses at the end of the summer and keep pairs everywhere (and lose them too LOL!!)

No more clip on sunglasses I can buy proper ones!!

I wonder if they still sell the "Elvis" kind?

Good for you! You'll find it much easier to deal with a helm for combat archery if you don't have to deal with glasses.

I used to wear contacts. However, I have horrible allergies and work all day in front of a computer. Therefore, I decided to forego them a few years ago because I was tired of having sore, swollen, watery eyes.

I thought of the helm issue after I had them in a while. Booya! Being able to wear glasses in a helm was the major purchasing point. Now I have more choices.

Even if I decide not to wear them every day, I'll have them for SCA.

Glad you found a solution! Personally, contacts and I are not good friends. I'll keep my face furniture, thank you very much. I am told Cataract surgery is in my very near future and that may eliminate the need for bifocals. We'll see. Now you know we didn't turn Orange on you!

I also have an astigmatism and I found that I could actually see better with contact lenses than glasses; and those were the ones that didn't correct for astigmatism.

I'm currently in glasses, and I have to admit that I really miss my contacts a LOT but I can't seem to talk anyone into letting me try bifocal contacts (my glasses are bifocals); so when I do try contacts now swimming, I can't see nearly as well or as sharp and the ground rushes up to meet me really FAST :(

I've heard about bi-fcal contacts and that person seemed pleased with the result.

Yay!!! I also have astigmatism x2, but have been wearing contacts for years. Welcome to the world of cool sunglasses, and being able to rest the side of your head on a pillow with no worries.
Thanks again for the well wishes, am healing up just fine.

Remember scars are just tattoos with better stories! :-)

I am thrilled about not having to wear glasses for SCA anymore.
